Activities
The towns of Encampment, Riverside, Saratoga, Wyoming (twenty miles from Riverside) and surrounding area
are loaded with outdoor activities and site seeing. There are also several area events, including the world famous
Woodchoppers Jamboree and Rodeo, which people from all over the country travel to attend. Listed below are
some of the popular activities and events that you won't want to miss during your stay with us.
Popular Outdoor Activities
Just a Few Area Events
Hunting and Fishing
Various types of large game and birds, including Elk,
Deer, Pronghorn, Bear and Mountain Sheep. There is an
almost unlimited amount of river and stream fishing, as
well as an abundance of area lakes. The Encampment
River is only 200 yards from your cabin!
Hiking and Site Seeing
If sight seeing and hiking is to your liking, you will love
it here. Public access lands and national forest areas
abound.
River Rafting
The Platte River runs through the valley and is not only
ideal for fishing but rafting as well. There are area
outfitters who will guide your trip, or you can go on your
own for just a couple of hours or an all day trip.
In the winter, those hiking areas become prime
cross-country skiing sites as they become covered with a
white blanket of snow.
Cross-Crountry Skiing
Snowmobiling
There are some fantastic areas for snowmobiling that are
just minutes away. This is one of the most popular winter
activities here.
The annual Ice Fishing Derby takes place at Saratoga
Lake on the third weekend in January. Fishermen from
all over come in hopes of claiming top prize.
Sierra Madre Winter Carnival
This event held during the first weekend of February
includes an ice sculpting competition, build your own sled
competition, snowmobile race and Casino Night.
This annual event is held on Father's Day weekend in
June. The year 2010 will mark the 50th year for this
event which features lumberjacks from all over the
country competing. There is also a rodeo for your favorite
cowboy or cowgirl to compete in. The fun doesn't stop
there, as there is also a parade and melodrama to add to
the experience.
The third weekend in July is time for this event which
promotes the history and culture of the western cowboy.
Events include a old west gunfight, a melodrama and a
country music jam session at the park.
During the last weekend in July, the Grand Encampment
Museum
Grounds plays host to this event where the days
of the mountainman of 150 years ago are recreated. You
will see authentic clothing and campsites of the era.
There is even a tomahawk throw and black powder shoot!
